'Gotham' Season 2 News, Update: Ben McKenzie Confirms Penguin is Currently Running the City

Members of the cast, together with its executive producer, recently discussed what fans should expect when the second season of Fox's hit crime-fighting TV drama series "Gotham" returns on air.

According to Ben McKenzie (who plays Det. Jim Gordon), the season will open up with Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin running the city.

"Mr. Cobblepot is the king of Gotham, at the moment, but it's a contentious situation because he's gonna fight for that constantly," the actor told the media outlet.

This year, as what McKenzie also revealed, would tackle more on the origin stories of the characters and less on the procedural side.

Ausiello proceeded with a question about the Batcave, which the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) discovered together with Alfred (Sean Pertwee) on Season 1 finale.

"It will lead Bruce … to find out who his father really was, what Wayne Enterprises really is – it will really start his transformation to become the Batman," Mazouz teased.

Bruno Heller was also present during the interview. He explained that it's never really like a "secret cave" as it is more of a "secret office" of the elderly Wayne.

When asked about Cory Michael Smith's future Riddler, the showrunner said that the "character is currently living in a moment."

"But this season is definitely the season where the origin story really starts kicking in; we start to see transformation … everything starts moving faster, becoming more grotesque and dramatic … and his [Riddler] costume will be part of that," the executive producer said in a statement, which in turn, echoes as to what McKenzie has said earlier.

"Gotham" Season 2 returns on air this Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. on Fox.
