What should Christians be doing while they await Jesus Christ's return?

Believers should take advantage of the opportunities that God has afforded them and use them for His glory. That's the message conveyed in a blog posted by Harvest Christian Fellowship Senior Pastor Greg Laurie on Wednesday.

Laurie explains that in ancient times when a wealthy man left his home to go on a journey, he would often leave his highly trusted servants with the authority to run his household and to oversee his finances.

Just like those servants maintained and oversaw the wealthy man's home, property and business, so should Christians with what God has entrusted them in their own lives until He returns.

Laurie then cites Matthew 25:15, which reads: Jesus said the man "gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last — dividing it in proportion to their abilities."

The Harvest Christian Fellowship senior pastor likens Jesus to that wealthy sojourner. "Jesus is like that wealthy man who went on a journey, and we are the servants in which He has made an investment."

Laurie encourages Christians to take advantage of opportunities while they are available and to be productive and make the most of their lives.

As explained in Ecclesiastes 11, Christians should work and then move on to the next activity, not waiting for a watched pot to boil or putting all of their eggs into a single basket. Most of all, they should trust God for their increase.

"Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you. ... Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don't know if profit will come from one activity or another — or maybe both" (11:1, 6).

Laurie says, "Jesus is like that wealthy man who went on a journey, and we are the servants in which He has made an investment. This story, like so many in the Scriptures, reminds us to take advantage of opportunity while it is available."

"We are to take what He has given us and use it for His glory while we await His return."
