Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) is widely expected to have a release date scheduled for the coming months, with some new rumors even suggesting one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time will make an announcement in the coming weeks.
According to Wedbush analyst, Michael Pachter, the release date for GTA 5 could be announced by publisher, Take Two, on Feb. 5 when it is scheduled to announce its fiscal 2013 Q3 results.
Pachter as well as a number of other analysts have said that they expect the release date to drop sometime in May, and rumors have been persistent that Rockstar is preparing a spring launch.
Meanwhile, a November interview by Dan Houser, vice president of Rockstar, with French publication Ecrans, has revealed the executive's insight on a future science fiction version of GTA.
At that point Houser suggested that the future GTA was only in the conceptual stage: "We will do it the very second we have an idea. One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We're not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game."
The decision to change genres will not be taken lightly, and Rockstar had a reason to make the previous western version, Red Dead Redemption. Houser said, "When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say."
He added, "We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything is possible in a video game, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason."
Even though most rumors suggest a May launch date, another site, iDigital Times has suggested a release date of either Mar. 15, Mar. 27, or at the latest during the first week of April.
