'Hannibal' News: Amazon Executives On Not Picking Up the Hit NBC Show
NBC cancelled its highly-rated and popular psychological-horror drama TV series "Hannibal" after running it for three seasons. The bereaved fans of the show hoped that it will get saved by other networks. Its executive producer, Bryan Fuller, even initiated talks with streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix for a renewal. But it came to no avail.
It was revealed last month that the "House of Cards" broadcaster won't pick up the series since they wouldn't have all the seasons in their service.
Amazon, on its part, won't also be renewing the Mads Mikkelsen-led TV series for a reason that echoes that of Netflix's.
IGN.com caught up with Amazon's executive Roy Price during his appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour in California this week. The publication asked why they opted to close their doors on Hannibal.
"We occasionally look at shows that could be revived. Often it's complicated from a business point of view," Price told IGN. "The thing about extending a show is that you would always be doing -- this is not a reflection on Hannibal in particular -- but you would always be doing that or you would usually be doing that, let's say, instead of doing the first season of a new show."
Amazon Head of Comedy Joe Lewis also talked about it.
"It's also important … You want your originals to define your network, and that's something we think about," he said. "It doesn't mean we would never do it, but we are pretty focused on developing content that says 'Amazon Studios,' that speaks to what we want to hand to customers. Maybe someday we will do something different, but right now, that hasn't come up yet."
The current season of "Hannibal" will air until Aug. 29.
