'Hawaii Five-O' Spoilers: Is Steve McGarrett Going to be Killed Off?

The head of the "Hawaii Five-O" task force, Commander Steven McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin), was poisoned last season. Will he survive radiation poisoning?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Peter M. Lenkov revealed that when they decided to poison the character, they did not intend to kill him off. Although McGarrett has faced several life or death situations throughout the seven seasons of "Hawaii Five-O," this particular moment will be pivotal to the character's future, particularly his legacy as a cop.

"Everybody assumed we were killing him off and it was like the last season, which was absolutely not on anybody's mind," Lenkov told EW. "Clearly it shows that he's mortal, and it's going to affect his legacy of what he wants to do post-being a cop."

While Danny Williams (Scott Caan) has been talking about opening a restaurant when he retires, his partner, McGarrett, will start to ponder on what he wants for himself when he retires as well. According to the exec, Danny's plan to become a restaurateur will be part of season eight's arcs. The pair will explore their options for the future.

McGarrett may be back next season but the team will no longer be the same again, without Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and his TV cousin Grace Park, who played Kono Kalakaua, in all seven seasons of the show. The pair shocked fans with their decision to exit prior to the production of the upcoming season.

Kono's husband, on the other hand, Adam Noshimuri (Ian Anthony Dale), has been promoted to series regular.

In an interview with TV Line, Dale said that Park has been supportive of his promotion. He admitted that he needs some time to adjust completely but his history with the island of Hawaii as well as with the cast and crew of the show will make the adjustment a bit easier.

"Hawaii Five-0" season 8 premieres on Friday, Sept. 29 on CBS at 9 p.m. EDT.
