"The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone."
It became more and more obvious that the Scribes and Pharisees were out to get Jesus... any way that they could. First, they attempted to get Him to admit that He was the Son of God. This would be enough to convict Him. But He refused to fall into their trap. Then He warned them what would happen to them because of their rejection of Him by telling the parable of the vine-growers, showing them that He was the chief capstone of God. They tried to trap Him with spies sent to ask seemingly innocent questions about paying their taxes, the expected answers to which would convict Jesus. But again, He refused to fall into their trap. Luke tells us that each morning of this week, the people would get up early and hurry to the temple to hear Him teach. And our Lord didn't disappoint them. He spent all of each day speaking to them about God. With one explanation after another, He told the people who He was, and how important it is to remain alert to false teaching. And at night, He would go alone to Mount Olivet to be alone and pray.
What is a capstone? When a stone arch is built, a stone is placed in the center at the top, holding the arch together. It is the focal point of the arch. It is what holds the arch together. Without the capstone, the arch would crumble. This is what Jesus is - the capstone of the church. He is at the top and in the center. He holds the church together. Without Jesus, there would be no church. Without Jesus, the church would crumble.
For the individual Christian, Jesus is also the capstone - if we allow Him to be. He is the capstone of our lives. He is at the top and in the center of our lives. He holds us together - mentally, physically and, most important, spiritually. Without Him, we are nothing. Without Him, we would have no hope. Without Him, life is a meaningless, fruitless turmoil that ends abruptly and eternally in death.
Is Jesus your capstone? Is He your primary focus in everything you do? Is He the most important thing in your life? Is He what holds you together. Is He your hope, your salvation? If not, isn't it time you let Him be? Rather than the stone you keep rejecting - just like the scribes and the Pharisees - let Jesus be the capstone of your life.
