HTC One M8 vs. Xperia Z: Spec by Spec Comparison

The HTC One M8 and Xperia Z feature very similar specs despite the amount of time between them both being released.

Sony's handset flew under the radar here in the U.S. while HTC has enjoyed some success with the original HTC One line that it hopes to continue with the new M8. With the Z2 already out on the market, does the original Xperia Z still have what it takes to be an appealing device in 2014? Here is a brief comparison of HTC's latest device with the Xperia Z.

The Sony Xperia Z comes with a 5-inch TFT display with 1920 x 1080 resolution at 441 ppi. The HTC One comes with the same sized screen at the same exact resolution. This is pretty impressive for Sony to have been this far ahead when it came to displays. The two appear to be dead even in this department judging by the numbers. The only way to tell who truly has the advantage would be with a side-by-side comparison.

Speed

The Xperia Z comes with a quad-core 1.5GHz qualcomm chip with 2GB RAM. The HTC One M8 packs a Snapdragon 801 chip with the same amount of RAM. Both of these devices are extremely fast in their own right, but the One M8 might have an advantage thanks to a newer processor.

Camera

The Xperia Z comes with a 13-megapixel camera with touch focus, face detection, image stabilization and high dynamic range. The HTC One M8 comes with a 4-ultrapixel dual-camera that takes better pictures in all lighting conditions. It also comes with a 5-megapixel wide angle lens in the front that gives it a significant advantage over many of the other competitors. Sony's device comes with a 2.2-megapixel shooter in the front. Thanks to some extra hardware, HTC might have the advantage here.

Conclusion

The Xperia Z is still a pretty powerful device considering the fact that it launched last year. It definitely still gives the HTC One M8 a run for its money in many areas. But even with that, the HTC One M8 seems to be more impressive overall thanks to a slew of extras and a more solid design. The latest HTC One could end up being the smartphone of 2014. The Xperia Z is still a great device and definitely paved the way for its more powerful successor.
