Huawei Introduces 6-Inch Mate 8 Flagship Phablet Ahead of 2016 Release

Huawei has finally unveiled its Mate 8 flagship phablets in Shanghai, China ahead of its release in the first quarter of 2016.

The Huawei Mate 8 is the next smartphone after the latest Google Nexus handsets to run the Android Marshmallow mobile OS. The Chinese phone maker is planning to unveil the device for the global market during the CES 2016, according to ZDNet.

The latest flagship phablets of the Chinese tech firm boasts of a 6-inch display and a sleek metal finish. The Huawei Mate 8 runs on the company's own Kirin 950 system on a chip, which has four A72 2.3 GHz and four A53 1.8 GHz processors. Aside from that, the device has a Mali T880 GPU and the Huawei i5 processor. The latter is responsible for the phablet's low-power consumption, speech recognition, and navigation features, the report details.

Taking its cue from the Huawei Nexus 6P, the new phablets also come with a fingerprint sensor located in the middle of the back side for easy unlocking of the device and identity verification. This feature can also be used to access secure files, shut down alarms, unlock apps, and even conduct mobile payments, CNET reports.

The device also has a 16-megapixel rear snapper positioned directly above the sensor, an 8-megapixel front camera, and a full-HD screen with a density of 368 ppi, the report adds.

In addition, the Mate 8 has a standard USB 2.0 port and is powered by a 4,000 mAh non-replaceable and quick-charging battery. In China, the flagship phablets come in three editions: 3 GB RAM with 32 GB internal memory, 4 GB RAM with 64 GB internal memory, and 4 GB RAM with 128 GB internal memory.

As for the pricing, the Huawei Mate 8 will cost at least $469 (CNY2,999). Customers can choose from among the gold, silver, mocha brown, and grey variants.
