I Ate Pizza…Now What?

We all go off of our diet once in a while - and why not? Life is all about balance, and that means indulging occasionally. When dieting, we are often so hard on ourselves that we end up backtracking more than we had anticipated. The goal is to treat yourself once in a while to whatever you desire so that you don't ever feel completely deprived. Believe me, it helps.

Often - once we slip up - we feel like we've lost control—it's the "well, I've ruined my diet today so I might as well keep going" mentality that leads us to eat 3 cookies and ice cream after that pizza.

There's good news and bad news: The good news is that our bodies are quite adaptable and you will probably not gain 5 lbs after one day of "bad" eating; the bad news is that eating patterns like the one mentioned above are not productive. It is better to have a small treat every day or one big treat every week.

Some tips for eating healthy:

• If you eat pizza, skip dessert and make yourself a nice, green salad
• If you eat dessert at lunch, eat whole grains at dinner and have fruit for dessert
• Make a treat out of superfoods; for example a cookie made from oats, grains, walnuts and dried blueberries
• When consuming a lot of sweets, make sure to also eat foods that will not raise your blood sugar; for example, nuts
• Instead of ordering in, buy pizza dough from Trader Joe's, your local health food store, or Italian restaurant/deli. Go for whole wheat when possible, add a lot of fresh toppings, and go easy on the cheese to save calories

The main thing to keep in mind is that splurging once in a while will not ruin your diet or your quest for a healthy lifestyle. The key is balance.
