Ian Somerhalder, Nikki Reed News: Actress Reacts to Backlash Over Husband Throwing Away Her Birth Control Pills

Power couple Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed recently became the subject of controversy when an interview they had was taken out of context by news outlets.

During an interview on "Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast" last week, the celebrity couple revealed that "The Vampire Diaries" star Somerhalder got rid of his wife's birth control pills when they decided to have a baby.

As reported by E! News, when they were asked about when they made the decision, the actor said "May," to which the "Twilight" star replied, "Oh yeah... oh when you threw out all my birth control pills."

Somerhalder also shared the story of how he and his wife met up with some of their best friends in Spain, wherein they all decided that they were going to have kids at the same time.

However, despite the interview being lighthearted and bubbly, it was taken out of context, and reports about it, portraying the 38-year-old actor as a bad guy who got his wife pregnant without her consent, were published, and he immediately received criticism from people who believed the said reports.

Coming to her husband's defense, Reed took to Twitter to call out the journalists that have perpetuated false reports out of a "funny interview between married people."

She followed this up with another tweet, wherein she slammed the irresponsible journalism that made Somerhalder and herself the subject of controversy. "Dear writer. Here's my note to you on irresponsible journalism," Reed wrote in a tweet, alongside a screenshot of a note the composed addressing a particular article, which claimed that Somerhalder "forced" her into pregnancy.

"When you actually listen to the podcast (which I'm sure you didn't) you'll hear how 'unforced' I felt," she continued.

The 29-year-old wife and mother of one also said that the journalist took the interview out of context in order to stir up drama without her approval.

On Saturday, before the couple attended the 2017 Environmental Media Association Awards, where she wore a long green floral dress and he sported a black suit, they released a joint statement through Reed's Twitter account apologizing to the people who were affected by "reproductive coercion."

Claiming that women's rights are important to both of them, they continued, "We never expected a lighthearted interview we did poking fun at EACH OTHER and how WE chose together to get pregnant, a goofy moment in Barcelona with our two best friends and the anticipation of our journey together as we went from two to three, to turn into something representing a very serious matter."

Reed and Somerhalder welcomed their first child, Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder, on July 25 this year. She is currently 8 weeks old.
