iMac 2016 Release Date and Rumors: Apple Promises Better Graphics and a New Processor; Specs and Price Details

The New iMacs are Expected to Feature Flagship Processors and Graphics

The 2015 version of Apple's iMac was considered by many as the company's best performing all-in-one desktop computers of all time. With such a successful device, the Mac fans have been clamoring for a successor, so here's everything we know as of yet about the next generation.

Design and Display

Apple dropped the bomb last year when it announced the new iMacs with resolutions of up to 5K Retina Display equipped with a whopping 5120 x 2880 pixels. The 2016 model is expected to continue using this display technology. This display also factors in performance and power efficiency as its main driving points.

On the design aspect of the machine, sadly, not much change is to be expected. With the 2015 version looking almost similar to its predecessor, the next generation would likely share the similar fate. Apple doesn't quite have the reputation with innovative and updated design through their recent devices.

Processor

The release of the new iMacs comes along with the newest chipset releases of the biggest manufacturers in the industry. Intel has launched the Kaby Lake processors, which is its last 14nm processing line as it will switch to the 10nm Cannonlake architecture next year.

On the other hand, the AMD Zen processor is also just released. The very robust processor allows users to tap into its processing power that features a CPU of 8 cores and 16 threads.

These top of the line processors are expected to be utilized by the new range of iMacs in 2016, using nothing but the best of today's computing technologies. The 27-inch model is geared to adopt the Zen processor though, allowing for a more high-end experience for its users.

Graphics

With virtual reality innovations gaining speed with development and popularity, the new iMacs are set to adapt with it. It is most likely that in order to compete with its Microsoft competitors, Apple would integrate a chipset capable of maximizing VR technologies. The Polaris 10 and 11 from AMD are built on smaller and more power-efficient processors than the ones used in the current 2015 27-inch iMacs.

Storage and Ports

The hybrid Fusion Drive technology, currently staple for the highest-end models, are expected to be standardized across all models. Flash storage has been integrated into the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, so the 2016 iMacs are anticipated to come with this. A new USB Type-C port is also rumored to make an appearance, along with existing ports that are long overdue for upgrades.

Pricing and Release Date

Pricing for the next generation 2016 iMacs are expected to be at the same price range as today's lineup. It starts at $1099 for the 21-inch 1080p version, and goes up to $4099 for the 5K version with the highest spec configuration. Release date rumors vary from late 2016 to June of 2017. This goes with the new iPhones and other Apple tech set to be released this year.
