No. 1 seeded Indiana Hoosiers came through the second round of the tournament in style, dispatching No. 16 seeds James Madison Dukes easily. However, they had a much more challenging third round game, only managing a six point win to get through to the Sweet 16 round.

No. 4 seeded Syracuse had a similar path to this game; in the second round they easily defeated No. 13 seeded Montana Grizzlies, and in the third round they too only managed a win margin of six points in a much closer affair.

Syracuse were unable to get their offense in order in their third round tie against No. 12 seeded California Golden Bears, only managing a 66-60 win. CJ Fair scored 18 points and James Southerland scored 14 points, but they struggled to get the points flowing throughout the game. At one point the team went a full 12 minutes without a field goal, and they only make six field goals in the entire second half.

The Hoosiers meanwhile struggled somewhat against the No. 9 seeded Temple Owls. A 58-52 win ensured that they did make their way through to this Sweet 16 game though.
