"Majority of Americans approve of sending Congress to Syria," a satirical website called The Onion wrote on Sept. 5. Though it was a joke, someone thought it was such a good idea that they started a White House petition to make it happen.
"As President Obama continues to push for a plan of limited military intervention in Syria, ... more than 90 percent of the public is convinced that putting all 535 representatives of the United States Congress on the ground in Syria ... is the best course of action at this time," The Onion wrote.
The post already has over 606,000 Facebook likes and nearly 17,000 tweets.
The petition references The Onion article. It reads:
I, the undersigned, want the US Congress to go into Syria. Personally.
Well-known sooth-reporters at The Onion have already determined that there is enormous backing amongst the American population, and I hereby endorse that position.
On your travels there, you should all be subject to the normal TSA search-or-irradiate rules, as well.
100,000 signatures are needed by Oct. 5 to receive an official response from the White House. At the time of this publication, it has 47.
