iOS 8 Rumors: Software to Include Song Identification Feature

The upcoming iOS 8 software is now rumored to include a song identification feature.

Apple is currently working on making this a new addition to the next-gen OS, according to a Bloomberg report. The company plans to partner together with Shazam to create a new way to discover a song that is playing on the radio or somewhere else.

Similar apps such as SoundHound also provide this same service that uses the device's microphone to listen to short sound clips and match the songs against a database. They also provide users with lyrics and purchase links.

Shazam can also recognize television and other media. This means Apple's new feature might also have this capability. Apple's version will be directly integrated into iOS and will not need to be downloaded. It will function with Siri.

iOS 8 is expected to debut around June 2 as that's the new confirmed start date for Apple's annual WWDC.

The World Wide Developer's Conference is held for developers each year and acquaints them with the latest Apple software, which will most likely be iOS 8. The system will not be usable until the iPhone 6 is released, but these developers will get a first look at it from June 2-6, which is when the event is scheduled to take place.

"We have the most amazing developer community in the world and have a great week planned for them," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Every year the WWDC audience becomes more diverse, with developers from almost every discipline you can imagine and coming from every corner of the globe. We look forward to sharing with them our latest advances in iOS and OS X so they can create the next generation of great apps."

The event will be hosted at Moscone West in San Francisco. Last year's WWDC introduced iOS 7, OS X Mavericks, iTunes Radio and the brand new Mac Pro computer. Developers who want to attend can apply for tickets starting today. That process ends on April 7. Attendees will be randomly chosen and tickets for the event will run $1599.
