Tuesday’s event is the first Apple Inc. media event since CEO Steve Jobs resigned in August for health reasons. The new CEO Tim Cook is likely to take the lead on unveiling the new iPhone, which will likely go by the name of iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s.

While Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 during his announcement, the product’s release date may come later in the month.

The iPhone is expected to have a number of changes in the software and will have some slight variations in appearance to the iPhone 4. The biggest change will likely be the inclusion of Apple’s latest iOS mobile software, iOS 5.

IOS 5 is speculated to include wireless device setup and content syncing, higher megapixel camera and Web-browsing apps. A New service called iMessage will allow iOS 5 users to send text messages to each other over Wi-Fi. The software is likely to be available for the iPad.

The new iPhone is likely to include Apple’s iCloud service, which can store content on Apple’s servers and can be accessed across numerous devices.

The look of the iPhone is likely to have a wider screen and thinner body.

Another notable hardware change is the inclusion of Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, which is the same chip used in the current iPad. The current iPhone runs on an older chip and the new chip will improve multitasking, opening apps and gaming.

Apple is also likely to use the event to announce new updates to iPods and iTunes music software.
