ISIS News Today: Defense Secretary Jim Mattis Lays Down Preliminary Plan to Get Rid of ISIS

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has laid down his preliminary plan to take down the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Mattis delivered his plan to the White House as he briefed the White House Principals Committee of the current administration on a detailed game plan that can defeat the militant group.

At today's news conference, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer confirmed that Mattis had already presented his plan to get rid of ISIS. "This plan has been delivered by Secretary Mattis, who is currently briefing the principals on the option presented today and seeking their input and feedback," said Spicer.

According to Pentagon Press Secretary Capt. Jeff Davis, Mattis' plan is trans-regional and is more than just a military plan. He said it draws upon all elements of national power and has been drafted in close coordination with their interagency partners. He also added that the plan is not just about Iraq and Syria but about getting rid of ISIS and other extremist organizations around the world.

The White House officials refused to identify the countries included in the plan but their comments hinted that it will also address the challenge of the fast-growing presence of the militant group in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other South Asian nations.

Davis described the preliminary plan as a framework for a broader global plan, which looks to find ways to eliminate ISIS quickly. The plan was requested by President Trump in a presidential memorandum dated Jan. 28. However, he was not present during today's meeting since the Cabinet inter-agency forum usually does not include the president.

Meanwhile, Davis revealed that the Pentagon is currently working with the Office of Management and Budget to finalize the amendment of budget for the Defense Department. Mattis previously emphasized that this amendment will focus on meeting the needs of warfighters.
