Iyanla Vanzant Tells Dr. Oz How She Overcame Rape, Death of Daughter

Iyanla Vanzant may be gearing up to premiere the second season of her show "Iyanla: Fix My Life," but the spiritual counselor recently opened up about overcoming some of the struggles in her own life.

Vanzant, 59, recently appeared on the Dr. Oz show where she opened up about overcoming her own troubled past. Although Vanzant helps a number of people overcoming their own struggles holding them back from being their best in life, she recalled going crazy after the death of her daughter.

"I lost my mind. I was crazy. Totally stork raving mad for six months, literally," Vanzant told surgeon turned talk-show host Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Oz. "And I gave myself permission to be crazy. Very often women think that they have to take care of everyone else except themselves."

The spiritual counselor recalled the timetable of her healing process.

"I went to bed, I got in my bed and we buried her on December 29, and I got in the bed and got out on June 3rd," she said on Dr. Oz Monday.

Although Vanzant had to overcome the recent death of her daughter, she is no stranger to struggle in her own life. The spiritual counselor and author opened up about some of the personal issues she faced before helping others do the same.

"Two things saved me. Raped at nine and mother at 16, and through all kinds of physical and emotional … for me, the physical abuse was one thing," Vanzant told Dr. Oz. "But it's the emotional abuse that many of us experience. Verbal abuse, psychological abuse … the thing that saved me Dr. Oz is that I never shut up."

Vanzant will attempt to save other people enduring struggles in their own lives during the second season of "Iyanla: Fix My Life" which will premiere on OWN network Saturday, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET.
