Jeep Recall 2013: 2.7 Million Vehicles Have Fire Risk in Collisions

Chrysler has agreed to recall 2.7 million Jeeps as of today, June 19. The recall affects two different models of Jeep, the 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2002 to 2007 Jeep Liberty.

The decision to recall the vehicles is a reversal for the Chrysler Group. As early as last week, Chrysler defied the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall of the vehicles, and said they did not want to recall. The car manufacturer claimed that the Jeeps were safe and did not need to be recalled. They released a statement explaining why they were opposing the U.S. government's request.

"We believe NHTSA's initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the agency to resolve this disagreement," the statement said.

However, it seems the automakers has changed their tune today, as they released another statement.

"Chrysler Group recognizes that this matter has raised concerns for its customers and wants to take further steps, in coordination with NHTSA, to provide additional measures to supplement the safety of its vehicles," the car manufacturer said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called for the recall because they connected the Jeeps to over 50 deaths, NBC News reports. The problem stems from the vehicles' potential to catch on fire when hit from behind, due to their construction and mechanics.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a statement of their own, urging consumers to take precautions and follow up on the necessary recalls. Their statement said, "consumers impacted by the safety recall and customer satisfaction campaign should have their vehicles serviced promptly once they receive notification from Chrysler."
