Jennifer Lawrence Slams Entertainment Industry for 'Selling' Sex

Actress Jennifer Lawrence is adamantly against Hollywood's interest in selling sex and during a red-carpet event, said that she hopes her "Hunger Games" character of Katniss Everdeen will be a good role model for younger girls.

"It's a part of the entertainment industry that sells-sex sells," the 23-year-old actress told BBC News. "And for some disgusting reason, young sex sells even more. It's not really something that I worry about because I feel like everybody's kind of got their own path and they have their own way of finding themselves. And for some people, that's how they feel best, that's how they feel sexy, that's how they want to perform. I'm just saying, to each their own."

Yet Lawrence hopes that Katniss Everdeen will provide a good, healthy sense of strength for young girls. She also explained that she refused to lose weight for roles, including "The Hunger Games."

"When we were doing the first 'Hunger Games,' it was a big discussion because it's called 'The Hunger Games.' She's from District 12. She's obviously underfed, so she would be incredibly thin. We have the ability to control this image that young girls are going to be seeing," Lawrence said. "Girls see enough of this body that we can't imitate, that we'll never be able to attain. This is going to be their hero, and we have control over that."

Lawrence has been an outspoken opponent of the "Hollywood norm" and is intent on doing things her way in order to be a model example for her fans.

"It's kind of an amazing opportunity to rid ourselves of that in this industry," she explained. "I think it's better to look strong and healthy. I feel like someone like Kate Moss running at you with a bow and arrow wouldn't really be scary," she joked.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens in theaters on Nov. 22.
