'Justice League' Release Date, Cast, Spoilers, News & Updates: Warner Bros. Dropped First Trailer With Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash & Cyborg – But Where's Superman?

Warner Bros. stunned the audience after it dropped the first trailer of the star-studded "Justice League" movie at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2016 on Saturday. While it received praises for its lighthearted tone, some DC Comics fans were wondering why Superman did not appear in the teaser.

A Shift From Warner Bros.' Dark Superhero Movies

The past superhero movie collaborations of Warner Bros. and DC Cinematic Universe have been widely criticized for being overly dark and dreary. However, the new teaser of the highly anticipated "Justice League," which is deemed as DC's answer to Marvel's highly successful "Avengers" series, veered from the usual dark and sad approach.

The fun trailer of the upcoming blockbuster showed Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne (Batman) recruiting "people with special abilities" to fight against some unseen and unspecified enemies. With the soundtrack "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes, Wayne's attempt to assemble a superhero team led him to some upbeat scenes and cool exchange of banters with Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa's Aquaman, Ezra Miller's The Flash and Ray Fisher's Cyborg.

DC Comics fans lauded that new "Justice League" trailer for its light and airy tone, the approach that has been mastered by Marvel with its monster hit superhero movies. "It is heavy, heavy, heavy on the rock and roll and superhero jokes. But don't worry, Ben Affleck is still doing the bat voice," the Los Angeles Times reacted about the sneak peek.

Where is Superman?

The surprise trailer reportedly received standing ovations after it was unveiled at the SDCC panel discussions. At the same time, it also intrigued DC Comics fans because Henry Cavill's Superman was noticeably absent from the teaser.

While some considered Superman's absence as a way of boosting the anticipation of the movie, others believed that Superman should not be joining the team since he is supposedly dead already. It can be recalled that at the end of "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice," Superman chose to sacrifice himself.

But Rolling Stone reported that "Justice League" director Zack Snyder hinted at the SDCC that Superman should be included in the movie. "You've got to have Superman," he stated.

According to Clarisse Loughrey of the Independent, Superman's absence in the new "Justice League" teaser confirmed a massive spoiler in the story of the incoming superhero team film. "His exclusion from the film's first trailer supports the idea his will be a late entry, with the film's dramatic crux potentially surrounding whatever dark forces led to his resurrection," she wrote.

"Justice League" will be hitting cinemas worldwide on November 2017.
