Katie Holmes is reportedly still in love with Tom Cruise despite abruptly filing for divorce on June 28, and new reports suggest that the actress ended her marriage only to protect their 6-year-old daughter Suri.
Holmes, 33, blindsided Cruise, 50, with divorce papers after five years of marriage because she reportedly felt compelled to choose either her marriage or Suri, according to Us Weekly Magazine.
"She actually still loves Tom but would rather leave him than have Suri turned against her," a source told US.
Holmes, who was raised Catholic, reportedly did not fear Cruise, a devout Scientologist, but was actually concerned about "his inner circle and the people handling her. They were so controlling it was terrifying," the insider said.
Cruise reportedly made plans to send Suri to a radical Scientology center known as the Sea Organization, which terrified Holmes.
The Sea Org is composed of adults and minors who have committed their lives to the volunteer service of their religion, and various ex-members have blasted the organization and its practices as being unhealthy, according to TMZ.com.
Holmes reportedly became involved with the cult after she married Cruise only to please him, but was never devoted to their bizarre practices.
"Look, Katie led a very ordinary and honest life before she met Tom and tried to continue to do so during the time she was with him. Katie is level headed and extremely smart. She was never completely committed to Scientology, but she participated because she truly was in love with Tom and she knew it meant a lot to him," a source said.
Even after successfully leaving Cruise, Holmes was still reportedly so concerned about Suri having any type of Scientology-based upbringing that she demanded her divorce attorneys establish a clause in her divorce settlement agreement which prohibits Cruise from ever doing so.
"Suri is Katie's number one priority. Tom only has Scientologists that work for him and Katie insisted that her staff will always be with their daughter. Under terms of the settlement, Suri isn't permitted to be exposed to anything Scientology related and this includes going to any Scientology churches, parties, etc. Katie made sure that this was ironclad in the agreement," an insider told Radar Online.
Holmes and Cruise's divorce was settled and finalized on Monday, and Suri has been banned from Scientology as per her mother's request.
Holmes has also reportedly since enrolled her daughter in a Catholic school with the help of her parents Martin and Kathleen Holmes.
