'Law & Order: SVU' Season 17 Spoilers: Showrunner Opens Up About Rollins And Carisi

In last Wednesday's winter premiere of the police procedural drama series "Law & Order: SVU," viewers may have noticed what appeared to be a spark of a connection between fellow Junior Detectives Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Dominick Carisi (Peter Scanavino).

In an early part of the episode, titled "Catfishing Teacher," Rollins, who is currently adjusting to motherhood, takes her baby daughter out for a walk with Carisi. When the baby begins to fuss, the surprisingly gentle detective carries her and soothes her, giving Rollins several parenting tips as he does. At this, Rollins gets a glimpse into a side of her colleague she has never seen before and may have begun to see him from a whole new perspective.

Now, "Law & Order: SVU" showrunner Warren Leight has weighed in on the possibility of a blooming romance between Carisi and Rollins, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "Something was going on with Rollins that she had not felt before."

"Rollins has had one point of view on Carisi for a long time, like the annoying younger brother point of view, and I thought I saw something really interesting in that moment," he said. "I'm curious to see where it goes."

Carisi joined the team as a temporary replacement after Nicholas Amaro (Danny Pino), with whom Rollins had had an affair, was transferred to Staten Island. The character has progressively evolved into a vital member of the squad. "The more you get to know Carisi, the more you like him and the more you trust him and I think that's what's happening to Rollins," the "Law & Order: SVU" boss said.

Though the insinuation that Carisi and Rollins may eventually get together may have surprised some fans, Rollins does have a history of getting involved with men in uniform. Apart from Amaro, the father of Rollins' newborn daughter, Declan Murphy (Donal Logue), is also a police officer.

While he compares the relationship between Rollins and Amaro to "ports in a storm," of a potential Rollins-Carisi relationship, Leight said, "It felt so much more organic than others."

The 17th season of "Law & Order: SVU" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
