Lena Dunham Wins Golden Globes Despite Critics

Lena Dunham was perhaps the most surprised of all upon learning she won two Golden Globes at last night's award ceremony. Dunham took home the award for Best Television Comedy and Best Actress for her work on HBO's series "Girls."

"This award is for every woman who felt like there wasn't a space for her," Dunham said in her acceptance speech. "This show has made a space for me."

Dunham also thanked those running against her in the Best Actress category, which included Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She called them "women that inspire me deeply and have made me laugh and comforted me at the darkest moments of my life."

"Julia, Tina, Amy and Zooey have respectively gotten me through middle school, mono, a ruptured ear drum and the acute anxiety that populates my entire life, and I worship them," she added.

The night held even more meaning for Dunham, who was recently the victim of a verbal lashing by shock-jock Howard Stern.

"It's a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off, and it kind of feels like rape. She seems – it's like – I don't want to see that. I learned that this little fat chick writes the show and directs the show and that makes sense to me because she's such a camera hog that the other characters barely are on," Stern said during his radio show.

"My opinion, if I was a producer on that, I'd say, 'Honey, you're a little too close to the project. You need to allow the other characters to breathe a little and let us get invested in them,'" Stern added.

Apparently he was in the minority, as "Girls" took home the Golden Globe for Best Television Comedy after its freshmen debut. The new season starts Sunday, Jan. 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
