Correction appended

Liberty University, known as being one of the largest Christian universities in the United States, has acquired another accolade: it has become the largest non-profit online university.

The school announced last month that its online enrollment is now at approximately 62,000 students.

These numbers in conjunction with more than 12,000 on-campus enrollments make Liberty the largest Christian university in the world.

“This is a historic event for Liberty University Online, enrollment management and Liberty University,” said Chris Johnson, vice president for enrollment management. “We want to give thanks to the Lord for making this accomplishment possible.”

Liberty University Online was founded in 1985 and is one of the first distance learning programs ever established. Enrollment grew steadily, reaching 25,000 students in 2008 and has a major influx, almost doubling in the last two years. Over 10,000 students have enrolled since April 2010 alone.

The online school boasts 45 degree programs and 100 concentrations for Associate, Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral/Post Graduate degrees. LUO also hosts distance learning programs for home schooled children in grades three through 12.

Its motto, “40 years of training champions for Christ,” gives an idea of the commitment to faith-based learning that can be found at Liberty Online.

Having an equally extensive online social networking presence, students comment and communicate via LUO's Facebook page. Students have reported that they too are excited and proud to be a part of this achievement.

"Best college education ever! Liberty is awesome! Keep on moving up. I tell everyone I know about LUO," said James Allen Majors, a student from Aumsville, Oregon, commenting to a photo gallery for the Liberty University Online 60,000 student celebration that took place on June 21.

Many students are choosing Liberty University Online because it culminates several attractive qualities in a Christian school: commitment to academic excellence, affordable tuition, Christian scholarships and faith-based community.

Online pastor Kevin Conner notes how LUO goes above and beyond to cater it its students.

“Liberty Online Ministries provides spiritual support to our online students through prayer, counseling, and online resources,” he said.

This is also apparent through the online university's Facebook page. Constant updates keep students engaged and communicating, posing questions such as, "How have you been applying the knowledge you gained at Liberty in your life?"

Online student Shanna Mae responded stating, "I've used the Bible classes (especially Bibl350) to help my brother better understand the difference between modern Christians and the Biblical audience in relation to how we interpret the Scriptures for today. Fun stuff!"

 Wednesday, August 10, 2011:

An article written on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, about Liberty University Online having 62,000 students enrolled, incorrectly stated that LUO became the the largest online university. The Christian Post has confirmed with Liberty University that the LUO became the largest non-profit online university, not the largest online university.
