Los Angeles Chargers Wide Receiver Mike Williams Expected to Make His NFL Debut This Sunday

Rookie wide receiver Mike Williams could make his National Football League (NFL) debut this Sunday when the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Oakland Raiders.

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has confirmed that Williams is "very close" to returning to game action and the team officials are going to make a decision on his availability by the end of the week. The rookie has also said that he expects to make his debut on Sunday.

"I'm expecting to play. I'm gonna practice hard, go through all the plays. Whatever decision the coaches make, I'm going to be ready for it," Williams said, via the Orange County Register.

Williams has been on the shelf since he sustained a mild disc herniation in his lower back in the first day of practice at the Chargers' rookie minicamp in May. The injury forced him to miss the organized team activities (OTAs), training camp, and the preseason, and some observers have even speculated that he might miss the entire season.

However, the Chargers managed to alleviate some of the fears by activating him from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before the start of the season.

Williams finally returned to practice in mid-September and now he's ready to make his debut. He has yet to play a single game in the NFL, but he has already earned the praise of veteran quarterback Philip Rivers.

"Just physically the things he can do (are impressive)," Rivers said, via the Chargers' official website.

"His range and length really for a big guy (is impressive). In my time with him in the last few weeks, he stops very well. He can put on breaks suddenly. It's not a slow lumbering to a stop. He's sudden, and that's even better for a big guy," he continued.

The Chargers have gotten off to a rough start this season, but Williams's return will give their receiving corps a much-needed boost.
