'Madam Secretary' Season 4 Episode 3 Spoilers: Elizabeth Tries to Prevent a Syrian Meltdown

Elizabeth (Tea Leoni) and her team will be faced with another international emergency in the upcoming season of "Madam Secretary."

In the episode titled "The Essentials," the synopsis reveals that the State Department squad will try to prevent a potential meltdown in Syria. Due to the lack of electricity and water, riots are breaking out, threatening the security of so many innocent people. Elizabeth's plan is to help fund an electrical grid in a Syrian refugee camp to avert the chaos, but things are not going as she planned. She needs to locate the money to start the ball rolling.

Elizabeth's options are severely limited. Aside from the looming international crisis, her own government is facing an internal one that has the potential to destroy what they all have worked hard for. In the promo, President Dalton (Keith Carradine) can only gape at his aide when he says they need to dismiss people from their jobs in order to get by. Elizabeth also has the same dilemma. The clip shows the secretary talking to Daisy (Patina Miller) who is trying to convince her to let her keep her job even though she is pregnant.

In an urgent meeting with Nadine (Bebe Neuwirth) and Jay (Sebastian Arcelus), Elizabeth informs them that they need to work fast to search for a viable solution. Since the start of the current season, things have not been going okay for the secretary. After she became the subject of fake news, accusing her of murdering a visiting official, her trust rating has dropped considerably. Dalton's administration also took a hit, since Elizabeth has always been one of its main players.

Elsewhere, Henry (Tim Daly) will fear for Dmitri's (Chris Petrovski) safety. The young Russian will reportedly go missing. Previously, Dmitri had been feeling the stress of being discriminated against on the job. No one in the CIA wanted to believe Henry when he vouched for the younger man's integrity.

"Madam Secretary" season 4 airs Sundays, at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
