Man+Wife4Life Campaign Gains Momentum in Australia
The Australian Christian Lobby's campaign to support the current definition of marriage in Australia has received extensive support in the Northern Territory.
Over 100 people crammed into a hall at the Charles Darwin University on Thursday in support of the "man+wife4life" campaign, with over 13 local churches represented.
ACL's Northern Territory spokeswoman, Lois Fong, said 110 people registered their support for traditional marriage at the event.
Attendees also heard from a number of church organizations that voiced their support for marriage, including the Salvation Army, the Baptist Union of NT, the Catholic Diocese of Darwin, the Baptist Church and the Apostolic Church of Australia.
"The evening ran really smoothly. The Bishop Eugene Hurley from the Catholic Diocese of Darwin was excellent as was Major Peter Wood from the Salvation Army," Fong said. "Toni Rehrmann spoke as a school chaplain and focused on the fact that children fared best when raised in a family with a mother and a father whose marriage was healthy.
"Joy White from the Bagot Community and Connie, health worker from Yuendumu, spoke from a cultural perspective but tied it in beautifully with the Genesis account [of marriage]," she added.
Despite the overwhelming support for the traditional concept of marriage in the general community, the institution continues to be under threat with political parties constantly testing the waters of public opinion.
The man+wife4life campaign is yet another example of how the Christian Church and community is able to influence outcomes in public policy in the same way other community based organizations have done for many years.
The goal of the Australian Christian Lobby's man+wife4life campaign is for 25,000 people to sign a petition and for thousands of people to send individually typed and personal letters to Members of Parliament and Senators outlining the need to retain marriage as an institution between a man and a woman for life.
