According to Mlive, two winners got the next highest prize at $1,000,000 each for matching the five white balls but not the gold ball. The two winners bought their tickets from Florida and California.

Seventeen winners also got $5,000 each for matching 4 white balls and the Mega ball. In addition, three winners got $25,000 each for getting the same patterns right but they purchased the Megaplier which was set at 5X.

How to Play

Mega Millions can be played in 44 states in the US. All you need to do is purchase a ticket in your nearest outlet. The bettor must choose 6 numbers, 5 white balls and 1 gold ball. Each of the 5 white balls is chosen from between 1 to 75. The gold ball, also known as the Mega Ball, is chosen between 1 to 15.

Tickets are worth $1 each, but in most states a player can choose the Megaplier option for an additional $1.

If bettors are too lazy to come up with their own numbers, they can use the Easy Pick system which uses a computer to randomly generate a number for them.

To win the jackpot, a bettor must get all six winning numbers correctly. But there are other prizes aside from the jackpot. For example, the next highest prize is called 5+0, which means that all 5 white balls are matched but the Mega Ball isn't. That's worth $1 million.

Other prizes include 4+1 ($5,000), 4+0 ($500), 3 + 1 ($50), 3 + 0 ($5) , 2 + 1 ($5), 1 + 1 ($2) and 0 + 1 ($1). Most states also include a Megaplier feature, which is drawn to be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 times the winning ticket.

Payment options

Winners can choose between the annuity option and the cash option. For the cash option, the winner gets a one-time pay immediately. In contrast, the annuity option breaks down the cash into annual payments in a span of 30 years. To account for inflation and increases in the cost of living in general, each annual payment is five percent bigger than the previous.
