He was the band’s lead guitarist until he was fired from the group in 1983 and went on to find another heavy metal band, Megadeth.

Today marks 20 years that Metallica released their “Metallica” album, also commonly referred to as the “Black Album.”

The groundbreaking album sold over 22 million copies in the United States and became a number one record in nearly 20 countries across the globe.

The album redefined the heavy metal music scene, catapulted the band into the mainstream music, and enshrined the group into heavy metal music history.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told Musician magazine that the success of the “Metallica” album would never be duplicated.

He said, “I believe that you don’t have more than one gargantuan record in your career. I don’t think it’s possible. You have a record like Back in Black. You have a record like Synchronicity. You have a record like Nevermind. You have a record like the Black album. But you don’t have more than one like that.”

If Megadeth’s Mustaine has things his way, Ulrich would have spoken too soon.
