Phelps captioned the shot, "She said yes."

Johnson also took to the photo sharing app to share the happy news. She posted a similar photo, showing them in the same position while looking at each other's faces.

"I'm gonna be a Mrs," she wrote.

According to E! Online, the two have dated on and off since 2007. The photos were reportedly taken by Allison Schmitt, who was Phelps' training partner and is a six-time Olympian and champion swimmer as well. Schmitt shared a picture of the newly engaged couple which features a closer look at Johnson's ring.

"Can not be more excited for the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Phelps," Schmitt captioned the photo of the three of them smiling at the camera.

Soon after, the Olympian's family also took to their respective Instagram accounts to congratulate the happy couple. Phelps sister, Hilary, posted a picture of the couple and wrote, "Sisters!! It's official!! A huge congratulations (and a ton of love) to these two on their engagement!"

The rest of Phelps' family raised a toast to the couple as seen on the swimmer's mother's Instagram account which was posted on Sunday.

As of the moment, no wedding date has been announced by the happy couple.
