Michelle Obama Wows at the Kennedy Center Honors Reception

Michelle Obama stole the spotlight at the 2013 Kennedy Honors reception held at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.

The First Lady and President Barak Obama arrived hand-in-hand at the event, which was held in the White House's East Room on Dec. 8 and honored artists such as Billy Joel and Herbie Hancock.

Although the Honors recognize major artists who have influenced American culture, Mrs. Obama caught much of the attention in an emerald green custom-made Marchesa gown that featured a fitted bodice and fly-away sleeves.

Meanwhile, the 36th annual Kennedy Center Honors Gala recognized five individuals for their lifetime of achievements. Among this year's recipients was opera singer Martina Arroya, keyboardist Herbie Hancock, actress Shirley MacLaine, singer-songwriter Billy Joel and Carlos Santana.

President Obama saluted the honorees ahead of the evening's performances, referring to each recipient as "extraordinary."

"The diverse group of extraordinary individuals we honor today haven't just proven themselves to be the best of the best," said the Commander in Chief. "Despite all their success, all their fame, they've remained true to themselves- and inspired the rest of us to do the same."

Other guests at Sunday's event included actresses Anna Kendrick and Glenn Close, as well as singers Garth Brooke and Tony Bennett.

The 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Gala concluded with a supper dinner in the Grand Foyer, according to the Kennedy Center's website. A recording of the event will air as a two-hour primetime special on CBS Sunday, Dec. 29th at p.m. EST.

With the holidays quickly approaching, the White House has been lavishly decorated with Christmas trees and lights this year.
