'Modern Warfare 3' Release Date: Next 'Call of Duty' Title Arriving in 2012

The next installment in the "Call of Duty" series is said to arrive next year.

Activision, the publisher of the video game series, confirmed the next Call of Duty is on its way.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision, gave a statement on the announcement: "As we focus on 2012, we have a strong product pipeline which features a minimum of two highly-anticipated new titles from Blizzard Entertainment, including Diablo III, and a new Call of Duty game from Activision Publishing."

"As a result, we expect to deliver another year of profitable growth. I believe our unyielding commitment to excellence and our creative talent around the globe will continue to position Activision Blizzard as the leader in interactive entertainment,” Kotick added.

Some reports claim video game developer, Treyarch, would develop the next Call of Duty.

Treyarch developed last year's "Call of Duty: Black Ops," which sold 5.6 million on its first day. A reported 2.8 billion hours of game play for the online portion of Black Ops has been played thus far.

Treyarch was also responsible for developing "Call of Duty: World at War." The game sold over 1.41 million units in November 2008.

"Modern Warfare 3" was released yesterday for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The new game was codeveloped between Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games.

Anthony Gallegos of IGN.com gave his review of 'Modern Warfare 3: "Despite its flaws, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 takes the fantastic series we’ve come to love over the years and iterates on it with great success. The multiplayer is hands-down the best it has ever been, with more features, more modes and a ton of new levels and ways to interact via Call of Duty Elite."

"The single player campaign and Spec Ops mode add value to the overall package, creating something that may not be perfect, but is too damn addicting to pass up,” Gallegos added.
