NCIS Season 14: New Cast, More Action and Explosives, Old Formula

NCIS Season 14 will be coming back with the same formula that made it CBS' highest rating drama

NCIS Season 14 will have its premiere next month and fans who are still reeling from the bittersweet moments of last season can hold on to the promise of the showrunners that the upcoming season will not disappoint them. Major changes will happen to keep the long running series still entertaining and fresh.

The showrunners promise more mysterious crimes for the NCIS team and the season will have more characters thrown in. The series will also aim to expand to more dangerous territories where viewers can expect more gunfights. And, despite no longer having DiNozzo around, NCIS Season 13 will have more hilarious moments. This is something that was missing from last season.

Despite DiNozzo leaving the NCIS team, Michael Weatherly who played the beloved character for the series' 13 seasons, did not burn bridges with CBS and will in fact be starring in another CBS series, Bull. The new drama will premiere on the same night as NCIS Season 14.

This does not mean however that viewers have seen the last of DiNozzo in NCIS last season. In an interview in May, Weatherly said that he has no problem in making guest appearances in the show should the writers want him in future episodes.

Weatherly's departure definitely left a big hole to fill in the NCIS cast but the showrunners are hoping that the cast additions will bring new energy not only for the season but for the entire series as well. Over the summer, Wilmer Valderrama (Minority Report), Jennifer Esposito (The Affair) and Duane Henry (BBC Doctor) have signed on to be included in the NCIS cast.

New and Main Cast

Henry was made a series regular after playing a recurring role last season. He plays MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves, a man who worked his way up to be a government agent from a blue-collar background.

Not much is known of Valderrama's character, Special Agent Nicholas "Nick" Torres except that he just returned from a deep undercover assignment. Meanwhile, Esposito plays Special Agent Alexandra "Alex" Quinn who will return to the field after being a NCIS training instructor for several years.

NCIS through the years has already endured major cast changes. These include the departures of the two beloved characters played by Cote de Pablo and Weatherly over the course of its 13 seasons. At this point however, it is safe to say that all the remaining main cast will be part of the series for the next two seasons at least after they signed their new contracts this year.

Guns and Explosives

Even as the NCIS showrunners want to return to the formula that made the series the highest rating CBS drama, they also want to test the limits of the show's action sequences. Viewers are told to expect more gunfights and explosions while the team solve cases.

Valderrama gushed at the recent ComicCon that at day 5 of filming the season premiere episode, there has already been a couple of explosions. He added,"…and I shot a guy off of a motorcycle already. I am crazy."

NCIS Season 14 will premiere on September 20 on CBS.
