Neil Patrick Harris Yells, Curses at Fan During Show; It Was 'A Light-Hearted Moment,' Rep Explains

Neil Patrick Harris yelled at a fan during a performance of his Broadway show "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" recently when the enamored fan interrupted with a loud "I love you Neil!" Some reported that the "How I Met Your Mother" star cursed at the audience, but Harris has denied the reports through a representative.

Neil Patrick Harris' yelling incident came while he was on stage playing Hedwig, an East German transgender rock star, when the woman interrupted loudly. Entertainment Weekly reported that NPH angrily screamed at her "I am doing something up here m-----------!"

However, Harris' representative pointed out that the play is open for audience interaction, and added that the quote was taken out of context.

"The response to the fan yelling was actually done in character – Neil as Hedwig, not as though Neil stopped the show to respond out of character," the rep told Ace Showbiz. "When the fan initially yelled, 'I love you, Neil,' Neil (as Hedwig) then responded, 'Who's Neil? I'm not Neil.' He then looked over at Yitzhak (played by Lena Hall) and said, 'Are you Neil? You better not be Neil,' followed by Hedwig then offering the quote in question."

"It was all done in good fun, and fully in the context of the show. The audience went crazy and it was really a light-hearted moment, which is not being properly contextualized in any of these various posts," the rep added, referring to the numerous media outlets that reported NPH's outburst.

The 40-year-old actor himself also responded to the controversy, saying that what he yelled on stage was just improvisation.

"It seems my Hedwig improvs are making news, but one should have the full story/context," Harris tweeted.
