Japan takes home several trophies at EVO 2016
The pinnacle of fighting game tournaments every year is EVO, and EVO 2016 did not disappoint. Each year thousands of hopefuls sign up for a chance at video game immortality.
This year two new games were introduced to the roster; "Street Fighter V" and "Pokken Tournament." Each game proved to be quite popular with "Street Fighter V" garnering over 5,000 entries.

UMVC 3 was once the pinnacle of the fighting game world, with thousands upon thousands of players trying to win the elusive EVO trophy. While the numbers are not as large as they used to be UMVC 3 still garners a large following.
This year's Top 8 included some new faces as well as some veterans of the game including EG | Justin Wong, NYChrisG and last year's defending champion KaneBlueRiver.
The grand finals came down to NYChrisG versus KaneBlueRiver with NYChrisG coming back from losers to earn his first EVO trophy in UVMC 3.
Winner: NYChrisG
Tekken 7: Fated Retribution
While "Tekken 7" has been played at EVO before, the newest version of the game "Fated Retribution" made its debut at this year's stage.
This version of the game allows players to use Akuma from the "Street Fighter" series. Akuma proved to be a popular choice amongst the players as two of the top 8 players used the character.
The finals was an all-Korean showdown as Saint using Jack-7 defeated Knee using Brian Fury.
Winner: Saint
Pokken Tournament
One of the two games premiering at this year's EVO, "Pokken Tournament" had the unique distinction of being the one tournament that ran late. The total time of "Pokken Tournament" ran two hours later than expected and the stream for the tournament ate into stream time for other games such as "Killer Instinct."
In the end there was an exciting, all-Japan finals with Tonosama using Braixen and Sceptile defeating Buntan using Suicune.

Street Fighter V
Street Fighter V was easily the biggest tournament of the day with over 5000 players signing up for a chance to win a trophy. The top 8 for Street Fighter V was made up mostly of Japanese players once again, with the loan hope for America being LI Joe.
Unfortunately for LI Joe his hopes for an EVO championship were dashed quickly and another all Japan finals was set up between teammates RZR|Infiltration versus RZR|Fuddo.
In the end Infiltration's Nash defeated his teammate Fuddo and his Rainbow Mika.
