New Dean Named at Gardner-Webb University's Divinity School

Charles B. Bugg, professor of preaching at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (BTSR) in Boiling Springs, N.C., was named the new dean of the Gardner-Webb University's the M. Christopher White School of Divinity.

Bugg will also serve as professor of church ministry and leadership at the twelve-year-old Baptist-related seminary of 200 students, founded in 1992, according to the Associated Baptist Press(ABP).

He will assume the deanship on June 1 to fill the position left vacant by Wayne Stacy in late 2003 to serve as pastor to Southside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla.

"I was impressed with the emphasis placed on congregational enrichment at Gardner-Webb," said Bugg. "My goal for the divinity school is to continue to prepare ministers who are skilled in academic competencies and who are caring and informed practitioners of the ministry."

A Miami native, the newly appointed dean earned his B.A. at Stetson University and his M.Div. and Ph.D. at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has done additional studies in Princeton Theological Seminary, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and College of Preachers, Washington, DC.

Bugg has served as Senior Minister of Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and pastor of First Baptist Church, Deland, Florida and First Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia. Additionally, he also served as an interim pastor in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

"We are delighted to have a person in this position with the character and theological caliber of Dr. Bugg," said the university president Frank Campbell. "He is an educator and a preacher who can relate to all walks of life."

Bugg is also an author of seven books and numerous articles and editor of the Abingdon Preaching Annual.

He and his wife, Dianne, have two children together.
