New England Patriots NFL Trade Rumors 2017: Darrelle Revis' Return to New England 'Increasingly Likely' Next Season

With all the moves this offseason, the New England Patriots' roster for next season is slowly taking shape. However, they still have to address one issue. Malcolm Butler's future with the team is currently in doubt because of a possible trade with the New Orleans Saints, and if he is traded, the Patriots will have to look for a player who can take his place in the lineup. Fortunately, a former Patriots cornerback is available and he will fit in quite well.

Citing multiple league sources, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora said the chances of free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis rejoining the Patriots seem "increasingly likely."

One league personnel man whose team has evaluated Revis also spoke at length with La Canfora about the cornerback and he said they were convinced he's going to sign with the Patriots if he decides to play on next season.

"We did our work on him. He can still play. He can cover. He doesn't have that long speed anymore; he's not going to cover a No. 1 receiver deep. But he can cover in tight spaces and he has great instincts. The film is not as bad as some would have you believe. He's a perfect fit in that quarters scheme Belichick runs, and they have the kind of safeties who can help him out, too. We're convinced he's going back to New England. It just makes too much sense," the personnel man said, according to La Canfora.

Sounds like Revis can still play at a high level. And the Patriots may not have to pay him much to convince him to sign with them because the New York Jets still owes him six million dollars this season. However, CSNNE's Tom Curran poured some cold water on the rumored reunion by reporting that the two sides haven't even discussed a potential deal yet. That can happen later, though.

Revis is still a solid cornerback and a return to New England may be the perfect move for him at this stage of his career.
