New Friends

Whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
-James 4:4 (NRSV)

I had known many of my friends since childhood, but suddenly it seemed they were disappearing. They were ending our friendships because of a decision I made to accept Jesus as my Savior and withdraw from everything that denied his name. How painful that was for me!

A few years ago I decided to serve the Lord, and many people who knew me did not believe the change in my life was genuine and lasting. They said it was only enthusiasm and that it would soon pass. When they realized that the change in my life and attitude was real, however, our relationships seemed to slowly dissolve. Although I had found a great friend in Jesus, I felt lonely. But before long I began to know and to go deeper into God's word, and I made new friends in Christ.

Now I feel much happier. I have grown spiritually and believe that "God will fully satisfy [my] every need . . . according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19, NRSV).
