Sotomayor is of course a native of the Bronx, New York City, and was famously appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009 as the first Hispanic to ever take the role. The Times Square official has stated: "We're excited to announce that Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will help lower the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball at 11:59pm on December 31st. "A native of the Bronx, Justice Sotomayor was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009, and was the third woman and first Hispanic to be appointed to the highest court in the United States. She is an inspiration to New Yorkers everywhere, and we can't wait to have her join us." Workers have been vigorously testing the mechanical Times Square ball in the days ahead of the big party so that no mishaps take place. On Dec. 29, special guest, The Amazing Spiderman, helped the official annual testing of the ball.
