New York Jets Quarterbacks Will Have to Fight for Starting Role

Most people probably thought Josh McCown was going to start for the New York Jets next season, but it looks like Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg would get the opportunity to compete for the starting role after all.

"I think all three of those guys will have opportunities both in the offseason and in training camp to kind of go out there and show where they're at," Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said during a conference call with reporters last Friday, according to NFL.com. "With any player on this team, they're going to have to earn their spot on the roster and I think Todd (Bowles) would echo that same thought," he continued.

Maccagnan did not rule out selecting a quarterback in this year's draft, but he said they were not looking to add another veteran quarterback.

"I think it would be highly unlikely. The next place we would potentially add a quarterback would potentially be through the draft," Maccagnan said, according to the New York Post.

Can the Jets find their new franchise quarterback in this year's draft? The Jets have the sixth overall pick of the draft and they are reportedly interested in Mitchell Trubisky. Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, Patrick Mahomes II and Davis Webb should also be available when it's their turn to make their selection. However, FOX Sports' Cameron DaSilva believes that using their first-round pick on a quarterback is a bad idea and he has a good point.

Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Luke Falk and Mason Rudolph should be available in next year's draft and they are clearly better than the quarterbacks in this year's draft class. So, why take the risk when there isn't a guaranteed franchise quarterback?

DaSilva also said that Hackenberg and Petty deserves a chance to show what they can do. McCown is the perfect stopgap quarterback and he should help the young quarterbacks develop. Right now, the Jets should just use their draft picks to address the other needs on their roster.
