Newborn Baby Found Inside Shopping Bag at Church Parking Lot

A newborn baby was found inside a green reusable shopping bag on Sunday afternoon at a church parking lot.

On top of a parked vehicle at the Korean-American Gospel Presbyterian Church in Schaumburg, Ill., a member of the church discovered the bag on top of his trunk after finishing Sunday services, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The man believed only a teddy bear was inside the bag and left it at the church lobby hoping its owner would come back and claim it.

It was only until the newborn began to cry that a church elder discovered there was a baby underneath the teddy bear, wrapped in an orange towel.

Bob Song, who immediately called the authorities, told the Tribune that he unwrapped the towel and found a little girl. “The baby girl opened her eyes and looked at us. She’s a really pretty girl.”

The Schaumburg Fire Department who responded to the call along with the police evaluated the Asian girl, who appeared to be in good health, and took her to a local hospital. She weighed seven pounds.

Police and hospital officials believe that the girl was not born in a hospital because of the length of the unclamped umbilical cord.

No information about the baby’s mother has been reported.

“I definitely feel God was working in this situation,” Song told Fox Chicago News. He shared that if the baby had not cried no one would have discovered the newborn for a day or two.

The church was typically closed on Mondays. If someone had found her on Tuesday, it would have been too late, Song stated.

“I felt so good that God let people hear the baby crying.”

Once the baby is released from the hospital, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will take custody, the police told NBC.

The public is being asked to assist with the investigation. If anyone has information about the baby or the mother, they are requested to call the Schaumburg Police Department Investigations Division at 847-882-3534.

The division provided no immediate response to The Christian Post when asked about any updates to the baby’s condition or status of investigation.
