On June 26 reports of an engagement surfaced after Hamilton, 28, made hints about a future proposal during a candid interview with a UK tabloid. On Tuesday however sources revealed that the couple, who dated on-and-off for five years, recently ended their relationship.

"Nicole is just so heartbroken and completely devastated," a source told Daily Mail UK.

The "X Factor" judge, 35, and Hamilton were previously rocked with cheating reports in 2012 after Hamilton was photographed allegedly checking into a London hotel with unidentified women. However sources have cited prolonged time apart as the reason behind their split.

"They're both very happy people and have been forced to spend a lot of time apart. Sometimes they would barely see each other for weeks on end. It was hard to keep the relationship going from afar," a source explained.

"Who knows whether things might change in a year's time. They do still love each other, but they are not together as it stands," the source added.

Hamilton, who was photographed on vacation with Scherzinger in May, showed no signs of relationship trouble while speaking with The Sun UK in recent weeks.

"We've been together for five years, which is quite a milestone really. But hopefully in the near future. Maybe before we get to six years," Hamilton told The Sun regarding when he would propose to Scherzinger.

The former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman was often photographed supporting Hamilton during his Grand Prix commitments and she previosuly opened up about wanting marriage and children.

"I think five years might be a good time to look at having children. But I think whenever it's meant to happen is when it will happen," she told Marie Claire. "Right now, I'm focusing on my career. I see lots of women having beautiful children later in life now. And, if not, just freeze your eggs."
