'NieR: Automata' News: Game Unexpectedly Sells Over 2 Million Copies Worldwide

When "NieR: Automata" was announced as a sequel to the 2010 action role-playing video game "NieR," a lot of gamers thought that it would be a flop. However, things turned out pretty well as the company reports that the game has already sold more than two million copies worldwide.

Based on an earnings report released by publisher Square Enix, the "NieR: Automata" video game has quite impressive sales numbers, even with other titles like "Final Fantasy XV" and "Rise of the Tomb Raider" also in the market, and have already exceeded their expectations. Because of this, it has a potential to become one of the company's next franchises.

"In addition, Nier: Automata, which we released in February 2017, has proven a global hit far in excess of our expectations," the company stated in the report. "It has not only reminded the world of the high quality of Japanese games, but also demonstrated significant potential for future franchise development," the report added.

Also included in the report are the overall status quo for Square Enix and a few hints about what the company plans to do in the future.

"NieR: Automata," which is a collaboration between game developer PlatinumGames and game director and writer Yoko Taro, has passed the two million mark in sales. Thirty percent of which are digital sales.

According to Rolling Stone, it has also become somewhat a phenomenon, with a number of critics saying that it is one of the best games of the year. Hideki Kamiya, the co-founder of PlatinumGames, reportedly expressed that the game "NieR: Automata" and collaborator Taro "saved" his company.

More importantly, Square Enix is reportedly hiring for "NieR" related projects, which means there could be more developments in the future.

The game was released in February of this year. It is available on PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam.
