The first episode of the mini-series "The Bible" on The History Channel seemed to jump off the screen last Sunday night with spiritual vitality and timeless truth. Three of the key biblical figures from week one were Noah, Abraham and Moses. This dramatic history lesson points us to Jesus....but will you look to Him and believe what God invites you to believe?
Noah's ark, like the cross of Jesus, was made of wood. Those on the ark were saved from the flood, just as those today who trust in the death of Christ are saved from the flood of sin and damnation. There was only one door into the ark. Likewise, Jesus is the only "door" into heaven. Will you come aboard God's "ark" today by trusting in Jesus to cleanse you of your sins? The ark of Christ's cross has room for you....but whether you enter it by faith, or not, depends upon what you do with Jesus.
Abraham was called by God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, as an offering on the mountain. At the last minute, the Lord stopped it from happening. Instead, God provided a ram to be sacrificed. Do you see Jesus in this true story from history? Do you see that God sacrificed His only Son on the cross as the payment for your sin? Whether you are a Jew or a Gentile, this message is for you today. God provided the Lamb at the cross. God provided the sacrifice. Will you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior?
Abraham was put to the test by God....and he passed the test. His only Son was spared....but Jesus was not spared. Our Lord endured the cross for you....and for me. We deserve to pay for our sins, but God sent His only Son as the sacrifice for our sins in order to spare us. Do you see how Abraham points you to Jesus? Will you look upon the cross and believe? Abraham passed his test, but what about you? This is your time....and you will either believe God, or reject the truth. Abraham is pointing you to the Messiah. You get to make the call for the health and salvation of your soul.
And then there is Moses. He spoke to Pharaoh and told him to let God's people go. Pharaoh hardened his heart. Among the signs and wonders God performed, the angel of the Lord killed every firstborn son in Egypt. Meanwhile, all the firstborn of the Israelites were spared by placing the lamb's blood on the door frame of their home. That was God's plan, and it pointed to what Christ would do one day on the cross. Today, you can in essence place the blood of Christ on the door frame of your heart by believing that Jesus died for your sins on the cross. You will be spared God's wrath if the blood of Christ is covering your sin through faith in the Redeemer. Do you see it....and will you believe it? Moses is pointing you to Jesus.
Moses led God's people out of slavery in Egypt, and they came to the Red Sea. God had brought them out....but He was about to bring them through. Pharaoh's army was pursuing them. And when they seemingly had no where to turn, God parted the waters. Moses believed God....and the Lord was faithful. Jesus delivers people today out of slavery from sin. One day, you will stand in the valley of the shadow of death. If you believe in Jesus, the waters will part for you and you will come across into heaven. That is a promise from our Lord Himself. (see John 11:25,26) Do you believe it....or will the waters come crashing down upon you as they did upon Pharaoh's army that dramatic day in history?
Moses was also the one to whom God gave the 10 Commandments. As we are told in the Gospel of John, "the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17) Moses points to Jesus by pointing to the One who fulfilled the law for us. Christ did what we could never do ourselves. We are lawbreakers. He is the Savior for sinners. "The law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith." (Gal. 3:24) Do you see where Moses is pointing you? Do you see the answer to your problem as a lawbreaker? Or are you still living under the delusion that the Bible is not true history, and that Jesus is not the Savior of the world?
There are four more two-hour episodes of "The Bible," which will conclude on Easter Sunday. This could be your month to rise up in faith....and meet the living God. Or it could be just like every other month of your life. Will you follow these men who are pointing to the Messiah? Will you look to the One who is the fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament prophecies? No one can believe for you. It is a very personal thing....while also being a message for the entire world. You can open your mind to the history of the Bible....or you can close your mind to the truth. What will you do?
You don't have to be Noah, Abraham or Moses to be loved by God. The Lord loves you for who you are....and He offers you a relationship of grace and forgiveness through His Son. "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." (1 John 5:12) It all comes down to this one critical issue....and this one crucial Person. What will you do with Jesus?
Stay tuned....the story on The History Channel on Sunday nights this month will continue to thrill your soul....that is, if you are open-minded to the message of the Bible....and embrace it through faith.
