Nook HD Tablet Released In the UK

The Nook HD tablet and the HD + model have been released in the U.K. this week.

Customers who pre-ordered the device at Barnes & Noble retail locations should be able to pick up their Nooks sometime this week.

Customers who did not reserve the tablet at that specific retailer can purchase it at other stores such as John Lewis, Argos, Asda, Dixons, Sainsbury's, Blackwell's and Foyles in the U.K.

The Nook HD and HD+ were unveiled back in September and launched in the U.S. at the very beginning of this month.

The tablets were released as direct competitors to the latest in the Amazon's Kindle Fire line.

The Nook will also go up against the wildly popular Google Nexus 7 tablet which launched back in Spring. The Nexus 7 has been said to be the highest selling Android-based tablet in the U.K.

The Nook HD is a 7-inch tablet with a display resolution of 1440x900 with a pixel density of 256ppi. It comes in two colors including a whitish snow, and smoke which is a dark gray. It features a Texas Instruments 1.3 GHz-dual-core processor with 1GB RAM.

It has the ability to play back video at 720 pixels for movies obtained through the Nook Video store in the same way the Kindle Fire does with the Amazon store. The device starts at $199 for the 8GB model and $229 for the 16GB.

The Nook HD+ is the first Barnes & Noble made tablet capable of playing back movies and television shows purchased from the Nook video store at 1080 pixels. The device has a 9-inch screen with 1920x1280 resolution. It features a Texas Instruments 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP 4470 processor and is priced at $269 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB.
