Olivet Nazarene University Receives $300,000 Grant for Science Depts.
U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller announced a $300,000 federal grant for Olivet Nazarene Universitys science departments during an ONU press conference last week.
U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller announced a $300,000 federal grant for Olivet Nazarene Universitys science departments during an ONU press conference last week. The grant, part of the Energy and Water Bill sent through Congress earlier this month, is designated for the improvement of science lab equipment.
On hand for the announcement on Nov. 14 were members of the ONU faculty and staff, as well as several current science majors. Andrew Twibell, associated student body president and pre-med student, expressed thanks to Weller on behalf of the student body.
According to ONU, statistics show alumni of its science departments have made smooth transitions into their chosen career fields. Since 1999, 24 ONU graduates (out of 26 applicants) have been accepted into medical school. In a survey of engineering alumni from the past six years, 67 percent found their first jobs before graduation, and an additional 33 percent found employment within six months of graduation.
Even so, University President Dr. John C. Bowling says the funding was desperately needed.
In order to adequately prepare tomorrows science industry leaders, it is imperative we are on the leading edge when it comes to laboratory equipment, Bowling said in a ONU released statement. This grant will allow us to replace outdated learning tools with items more appropriate for todays technologically advanced world.
Currently, Olivet offers ten science majors, including biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, computer science, engineering, environmental science, geology, physical science, science education, and zoology.
