One Direction News and Updates 2016: Listen to Niall Horan's Latest Single, 'This Town'

One Direction band member Niall Horan surprised fans all over the world by dropping his latest folk single on Thursday, Setp. 29. Titled "This Town," the stripped-down, mournful ballad came nearly a year after One Direction went on hiatus last fall, but not before dropping their fifth album, "Made in the A.M."

The release of "This Town" came with the announcement that Niall Horan signed a solo deal with Capitol Records USA. In a press release, Horan thanked One Direction fans for their continuous love and support, and expressed his excitement for the "next part of the journey together."

"This Town" is produced by Greg Kurstin (who's also produced for singers Adele and Sia), and written by Niall Horan, Jamie Scott, Mike Needle and Daniel Bryer. It's about coping with not being able to move on from a lost lover, and the things he would have said to her still. The ballad also came with a black-and-white "one mic, one take" music video of Horan playing the song down at Capitol Records.

As of writing, "This Town" has garnered more than half a million views since its release. The song has been compared to One Direction's ballads, like Little Things, minus the four-part harmony. Many also noted the similar gentleness found in most of British balladeer Ed Sheeran's song.

One Direction support

As always, One Direction fans flocked to support Niall Horan in his latest career milestone. Liam Payne even took to Twitter to congratulate his band mate on his new song, and urged fans to "give [Niall] all of [their] support." Liam Payne had also signed on to Capitol Records on July.

Louis Tomlinson also tweeted Niall Horan for his latest single. He said he's proud of Horan, and that the Irish singer sounded great on "This Town." Tomlinson is the only One Direction member so far not to have signed for a studio yet. The last quarter of the band, Harry Styles, signed on to Columbia Records.

Where to go from here

Apart from "This Town," Horan is also expected to collaborate with pop singer Shawn Mendes as well. The latter confirmed on "The Late Late Show" Wednesday that he and the One Direction singer were working on a new song together, and said that the next time they sat down for brunch, he's going to "write him a bunch."

Looks like things are looking up for the One Direction singers. Fans are hoping to hear from the other band members, too!
