Controversial televangelist Pat Robertson has recently stated that watching graphic entertainment such as a horror series or X-rated material can give demons "permission" to haunt a person.
The host of the television program "The 700 Club" received a letter from a viewer named "Michele" who asked a question about the linkage between demonic hauntings and disturbing entertainment.
"I was watching a horror movie the other day on the recommendation of others. It was rather strange and awfully macabre. And then, this past Sunday, I got into an accident leaving church," wrote Michele.
"Did watching that movie cause a curse, or the Lord's protection to be lifted from me? Did I grieve the Holy Spirit by watching this series?"
Robertson responded to the query on Tuesday as part of "The 700 Club" segment "Bring It On," a question-and-answer portion of the program.
"A few years ago I heard about a teenage girl who was demon possessed, and people began to deal with the demon and try to cast it out. And you know what the demon said? 'I had permission,'" said Robertson.
"And the permission was granted when this child had gone to some double-X-rated movie, or whatever it was, and had allowed this thing to come into her."
While advising the viewer to "command" in the name of Jesus the spirit to leave her, and calling it "kind-of otherworldly," Robertson cautioned that he did not believe this was an issue of demonic possession.
"I don't think you've been demon possessed. I don't think anything has happened to you. But nevertheless, declare victory and plead the blood of Jesus Christ over your life," said Robertson.
This is not the first time that Robertson has expressed his opinion on a matter pertaining to demonic possession to a concerned viewer.
Last year, Robertson received a query from a viewer named "Carrie," who was planning to donate some clothes to Goodwill, but was advised by her mother to pray over them so as to exercise any possible demons.
"Can demonic spirits attach themselves to inanimate objects? The answer is yes. But I don't think every sweater you get from Goodwill has demons in it," responded Robertson.
"Hey, it ain't going to hurt you to rebuke any spirits that happened to have attached themselves to those clothes."
