Gardner Hill Community Church, a small congregation located in the town of Weedville in northwest Pennsylvania, was the site of a burglary in which the perpetrators left a deer carcass in the sanctuary earlier this week.

Doty McDowell, Wildlife Conservation Officer for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, told local TV news station WJAC that this was something he had never seen in his career before. McDowell noted that given the hunting season, there are many possible suspects.

Congregants of the church do not know why someone would put a dead deer in the sanctuary.

Additional damage included a smashed window, a stolen stereo and antique table. An insurance company estimate puts the damages around $1500.

Gardner Hill Community Church was established in the 1940s in Elk County, Pennsylvania. At present, police have not charged anyone with the crime.

Gardner Hill Community Church could not be reached for comment.
