Phillip Phillips was crowned the "American Idol" of Season 11 on Wednesday, March 23, 2012. It was a very emotional night for the 21-year old guitar player who was chosen over 16-year old Jessica Sanchez. During Phillips' final performance of "Home" on Wednesday night's finale, Phillips broke down in tears with joy, surprise and relief it seems.

Phillips had thought that Sanchez would take home the crown.

When asked by MTV News whether he expected to win, he responded, "Did I think I was going to win? No. Heck no. Did you see Jessica's last performance? Golly. She sang the crap out of that song."

This young singer entered the competition not expecting to even meet the judges. He went on the long "Idol" journey enjoying every moment of it as a music lover and made it to the top, to his surprise.

Phillips shared, "Honestly man, I didn't think I'd even make it to see the judges because, like I said, man, I have no shame in saying that I'm not a great singer. You know, I just love having fun up onstage jamming with the guys and just playing good music man. You know, I like getting the crowd into it. Music's fun dude. It's takes away a lot of things that's going around.

It appears that he will immediately treat his health problem that he had endured throughout the competition. Phillips had delayed a much needed kidney surgery in order to compete in American Idol.  It has sure paid off.

"I'm gonna get some surgery done so I'm gonna get all better for the tour," Phillips said. "It was very tough but I had great doctors and great people surrounding me so that really helped out. So, it's just a blessing to be here now," he added.

He will reunite with the other finalists on the American Idol Live Tour 2012 this summer after recovering fully from surgery. He also plans to start writing his own music together with his brother-in-law. Phillips knows how he wants his music to be and will not stop to make music he loves - and America loves.
